He Never Came

As the last rays of the sun

Floated over the mountain.

I waited for my love to come rescue me

I was trapped in a prison I couldn’t escape

It was the prison of my heart

I waited for him to save me

Something had to be wrong

He was not coming this time

It was as dark as the emptiness inside

Why had he not come?

What was keeping him this time?

He was supposed to come with the dusk

Something was very wrong

I could feel it in my blood.

My mind calling out to him

Getting no response.

He wasn’t there anymore.

But I should have been there

Protecting him by day

As he did me by night

As he did . . .
