The Godfather and Rome

The concept of the Godfather movie can correlated to how the Roman society was organized.  The friendship alliance displayed between the Godfather and the mortician is one of an unequal balance; just like the balance displayed with the peoples’ allegiance to the central ruler in the Roman Empire.  Other societies were subjugated under the power of Rome and had to differ to them for what they needed.  The Roman society brought a great deal to the surrounding territories that they conquered.  Rome acted as their patron in which other societies depended.  The Roman ability of protection alone was worth respecting them just as the mortician diverts to the Godfather for help.  The mortician acts as a client to the Godfather giving him the highest honor.  With the help of the Godfather the client is indebted to him and on good faith owes him something should he ask for it.  The Godfather would be viewed as a great man in this type of society because he sets a moral standard for the rest of the people and displays what values he thinks are good to uphold.  He is the epitome of justice.
